I have been a professional wedding photographer for many years now and I absolutely love photographing weddings in the beautiful, diverse and iconic city of Newcastle.
Whether it’s the many spectacular landmark bridges crossing the River Tyne, the splendid architecture of historic buildings like Blackfriars, Moot Hall, Castle Keep, Grey’s Monument or the quirky, such as St James’ Park, The Planetarium, The Glasshouse and many more, there are plenty of outstanding locations for wedding photography to incorporate into your perfect wedding day.
Newcastle is a city where history and modernity blend seamlessly, offering an unparalleled range of backdrops for couples looking to capture the magic of their wedding day. From the timeless charm of Grey Street—often dubbed one of the most beautiful streets in Britain—to the contemporary edge of the Quayside, there’s something for every couple's aesthetic preference.
No matter where the bride and groom live Newcastle offers many stunning wedding venues that are surrounded by some of the best backdrops you could ever dream of for that perfect wedding image.
As a wedding photographer in Newcastle, this city is a photographer’s joy when photographing weddings or pre-wedding photography. There is nothing I like more than being able to take a couple on a short walk along the river front and capture them with as many different backgrounds as possible. This is a huge benefit to the bride and groom as it means they will receive a huge selection of pictures taken around the city and give them a great diverse album to choose from.
Beyond the riverfront, Newcastle boasts a variety of hidden gems that are perfect for capturing intimate and unique moments. Jesmond Dene, with its lush greenery and romantic bridges, is a favorite for couples seeking a more serene and natural vibe. Similarly, Leazes Park, located near the city center, provides a peaceful oasis with picturesque lakes and flowerbeds—a wonderful contrast to the bustling cityscape.
Planning your wedding will no doubt be one of the most exciting times of life together as you navigate your way through to the best day of your life. One of the biggest decisions you will have to make is choosing the venue that suits you. If a city wedding is your chosen preference, then hopefully this can help guide you on your way.
This is not a guide to which hotel or venue is for you, I will leave that for you to decide. I will, however, urge you to think carefully about the images that will be captured at your chosen location. If it’s a modern quirky venue such as St James’ Park, then your images will clearly reflect that and will have a somewhat commercial vibe to them. If you choose Blackfriars then your images may be dark as this is an old building and there is very little lighting inside. Outside there is a very picturesque courtyard and feature tree. City centre hotels all have their own special features and attractions, if they are lacking in those then fear not all we have to do is go for a walk and explore Newcastle!!
Head down to the river and capture images from standing on the Millenium Bridge with the Tyne Bridge and High-Level Bridges as a backdrop or just turn around and have the Baltic as your Backdrop, turn back a little and let's have the Glasshouse, walk off the bridge and start exploring the many other options on offer!
For couples who want a touch of grandeur, Newcastle Cathedral offers breathtaking interiors with intricate details, stained glass windows, and an ambiance steeped in tradition. Meanwhile, the Ouseburn Valley presents a more artistic flair, with its vibrant street art and creative spaces, perfect for couples looking to add a contemporary twist to their wedding album.
Choosing a riverside venue gives easy access to the many bridges and vista enjoyed from there. Of course, all of this is reliant on it not raining and being to get outside and enjoy the city skyline!!
No matter the weather, Newcastle has something to offer. If rain clouds gather, we can embrace the drama they bring to your photographs. From cozy indoor spaces to dramatic reflections on wet cobblestones, unexpected weather often leads to some of the most memorable and striking images. After all, your love story is unique, and Newcastle provides the perfect canvas to tell it.
